Health Insurance Minnesota

Welcome to First State Insurance Agency Southwest

At First State Insurance Agency Southwest, we understand that getting health insurance is one of the most important decisions you’ll make for you and your family. Health insurance is more than just a policy, it’s the security of knowing your family can access the medical care they need without risking their financial future. Finding a health insurance plan that balances quality care with an affordable premium is our top priority.

Since 1930, we have served as a trusted partner for the residents of Minnesota for health insurance. The modern healthcare landscape is complex, with rising rates and changing subsidies making it harder than ever to choose a plan. As an independent agency, we work for you, not the insurance companies. We’ll help you navigate the Minnesota insurance marketplace, compare network options like Sanford and Avera, and ensure you’re utilizing every tax credit available to keep your family’s coverage affordable.

Health Insurance Levels in Minnesota

Individual and family health insurance plans are categorized into “Metal Levels” to help you choose the right amount of cost-sharing.

Bronze Plan

The Bronze plan offers lowest monthly premiums suitable for healthy individuals. Bronze plans from most carriers are HSA-compatible for tax-advantaged savings as well.

Silver Plan

The Silver plan offers moderate premiums and deductibles best suitable for average-sized families. This is the only plan eligible for "Cost-Sharing Reductions."

Prescription Drugs

Helps pay for medications prescribed by your doctor like antibiotics, insulin, or long-term medications for chronic conditions.

Gold Plan

The Gold plan includes higher premiums but offers substantially lower costs when you visit the doctor or pharmacy. This is suitable for individuals requiring frequent care.

Catastrophic Plan

The Catastrophic plan offers very low premiums designed to protect against "worst-case" medical emergencies. This plan is usually available only to individuals under the age of 30.

Maternity & Newborn Care

Covers prenatal visits, labor and delivery costs, and newborn health checkups.

FAQs

How much does health insurance cost in Minnesota?

Health insurance rates vary by age and location. A 40-year-old in Minnesota can expect average Silver-tier premiums to range from $500 to $650 per month before any tax credits. However, many households qualify for subsidies that can lower that cost significantly.

If you miss Open Enrollment, you can still get coverage if you experience a life changing event such as losing your job-based insurance, getting married, having a baby, or moving to a new county. You typically have 60 days from the event to enroll in such a Qualifying Life Event.

For children under 19, dental and vision are “Essential Health Benefits” and are included in every plan. For adults, these are typically optional add-ons.

Cost Sharing Reduction are extra savings that lower the amount you pay for deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. In Minnesota, these are only available on Silver-level plans. If your household income falls within a certain range, you qualify for Cost-Sharing Reduction.

Moving to a new county is a “Qualifying Life Event” that triggers a 60-day Special Enrollment Period. Because insurance networks are often based on your zip code, your current plan might not be available in your new home, or your favorite local doctors may change.

Generally, no. You can only change your plan during the Open Enrollment Period (Nov 1 – Jan 15). The only exception is if you experience a Qualifying Life Event, such as getting married, having a baby, losing other health coverage, or moving to a different zip code. If you experience one of these, you have a 60-day window to switch plans. Without a qualifying event, you must wait until the next Open Enrollment to make a change for the following year.
